Most fictional places are "The location where the story is happening" and the events happening typically affect the characters we are following, not necessarily the whole city/ country/ whatever. Reading that bit in Jingo made me realize that I've never really seen that in anything like this. There's always something going on and everyone's talking about it or opining on it. You turn on the news and it's like "This scandal is going on" or "This group is holding a rally over this". I realized it when starting Jingo that people were starting to talk up a war against Klatch that I rolled my eyes and thought "Jeez, these people just cannot leave well enough alone, can they?". If it's not Trolls and Dwarfs going it, it's prejudice against Golems, wanting to go against Klatch or arguing about funny-looking vegetables that appear in the Times.

I'm currently going through the Discworld books, specifically the City Watch series (I'm on Jingo), and I've just realized that there's always something going on with Ankh-Morpork and its citizenry. Cue 2 paragraphs of Colon and Nobby arguing over what a "place" place is.
